TriMet will not collect fares on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025 — on what would have been the 112 th birthday of civil rights legend Rosa Parks.. It’s the fifth straight year that TriMet will celebrate the life and heroism of Rosa Parks by not collecting fares on our buses, trains and LIFT paratransit vehicles for the day. In 2020, we passed a resolution declaring Parks’ birthday as a day of remembrance across our service district. This year we’re again commemorating the day by not collecting fares on our buses, trains and LIFT. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks boarded a bus to ride home from her job at a Montgomery, Alabama department store. Rosa Parks’ brave act became a cornerstone of the civil rights movement and the catalyst for a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court affirming transportation equity as a civil right. Celebrate with us! TriMet renamed the Portland Avenue MAX Yellow Line Station for Rosa Parks in 2009, and in 2020, the Board of Directors passed a resolution declaring Feb. 4 as Rosa Parks Day. Our partners at C-TRAN and Portland Streetcar will once again join us in suspending fare collection for the day, to promote transit equity and encourage reflection on Rosa Parks’ historic stand for equality on board a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955. TriMet will once again waive bus and MAX train fares for an entire day next week in honor of celebrated civil rights leader Rosa Parks.
