Rosa Parks (born February 4, 1913, Tuskegee, Alabama, U.S.—died October 24, 2005, Detroit, Michigan) was an American civil rights activist whose refusal to relinquish her seat on a public bus precipitated the 1955–56 Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama, which became the spark that ignited the civil rights movement in the United States. When Rosa passed away on October 24, 2005, at the age of 92, people around the world mourned her loss. Her body lay in honor in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda, an honor reserved for only a few great Americans. Why Rosa Parks Matters. Rosa Parks’ story is a reminder that courage doesn’t always come with loud speeches or grand gestures. Rosa studied high school and the blacks-only Alabama State Teachers College. She had to quit school at 16 to take care of her grandmother and mother. Growing up in the segregated south was painful. In 1932, she married Raymond Parks, a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She was 19 at that time. The driver of the bus on which Rosa Parks rode on December 1, 1955, was the same James Blake. Fred Gray was Rosa Parks’ attorney at her trial on December 5. In 1955, African Americans were still required by a Montgomery, Alabama, city ordinance to sit in the back half of city buses and to yield their seats to white riders if the Rosa Parks chose to be arrested instead of giving up her seat and became a symbol of the fight against an unjust, racist system. Rewatching B99 from the start made me realize they shouldn't have had Rosa quit the force and be a PI, even though it's a method for her to continue investigative work with the crew. S1E14 had her state that all PIs are hacks, so why would she pick up an occupation she detests even though there was no evidence of her changing her beliefs?
