In continuing to review in chronological order the achievements of African-Americans in film and television for Black History Month, we're now at 2002 with The Rosa Parks Story, written by Paris Qualles, directed by Julie Dash, and starring Angela Bassett who also serves as an executive producer. Angela Bassett brings out complex layers of humanity in CBS' "The Rosa Parks Story," a tasteful and stylish biopic as much about love and inspiration as it about the birth The film is an account of the life of Mrs. Rosa Louise McCauley Parks and her actions in the civil rights movement. After she refused to give up her seat for a White man on a racially segregated bus after a long day at work, she was arrested. Essential viewing for Rosa Parks' story and yet, it's all too fast. The movie does a good job exploring her early life and what happened on that bus, but is rushed because of it being a TV movie that there is honestly more to the story. Bassett does a terrific job in the role. A solid TV historical movie. It’s a very well known story, but it’s valuable to dig a little deeper in this and see her life, to personalize the important historic figure that is Rosa Parks. They really showcased her strong will and commitment to justice and the right. This checks all the boxes. Insightful biopic tells story behind momentous bus boycott.
