In 1943 Rosa Parks joined the local chapter of the NAACP and was elected secretary. Two years later, she registered to vote, after twice being denied. By 1949 Parks was advisor to the local NAACP Youth Council. Under her guidance, youth members challenged the Jim Crow system by checking books out of whites-only libraries. Mr. Parks initially discouraged his young wife from participating, fearing for her safety, but by 1943, she was active in the chapter and serving as its secretary. She founded the Montgomery NAACP Youth Council in the early 1940 and would later travel throughout the state interviewing victims of discrimination and witnesses to lynchings. She founded the youth council of the local NAACP and trained the young people in civil rights activism. She had even discussed challenging the segregated bus system with the youth council before 15-year-old Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat the previous March.
