Rosa Parks was in jail for roughly a day. The president of the NAACP Edgar Nixon bailed Rosa Parks out of jail one day after her arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on Dec. 1, 1955. The courts convicted her of disorderly conduct four days after her arrest. Nine months before Parks was jailed, 15-year-old Claudette Colvin was the first Montgomery bus passenger to be arrested for refusing to give up her seat for a white passenger. (Parks was Rosa Parks, an African American, was arrested that day for violating a city law requiring racial segregation of public buses. On the city buses of Montgomery, Alabama, the front 10 seats were permanently reserved for white passengers.
