Mississippi Civil Rights Museum The Mississippi Civil Rights Museum, which opened in 2017 is dedicated to educating visitors about the Civil Rights Movement. It also provides more insight into the murders of Rosa Parks Bus Inside this bus on December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, a soft-spoken African-American seamstress, refused to give up her seat to a white man, breaking existing segregation laws. The flawless character and quiet strength she exhibited successfully ignited action in others. This video offers a guided tour of the primary exhibits at the museum, including the bus on which Rosa Parks protested segregation, student lunch counter sit-ins and the balcony on which Dr. King was assassinated. Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for 381 days until segregation on public buses was repealed. A forensic document examiner was hired to see if the scrapbook was authentic. A Museum conservator went to Montgomery to personally examine the bus. Convinced that this was the Rosa Parks bus, we decided to bid on the bus in the Internet auction. The bidding began at $50,000 on October 25, 2001, and went until 2:00 AM the next morning. Mrs. Parks Life in DC. Mrs. Parks' story, legacy, and connection to Washington, D.C. is little known — and yet, critical to the work she did. From 1994 to 2004 O Museum in the Mansion was the place Mrs. Rosa Parks called her home-away-from-home — staying here at no cost — as part of our Hero-in-Residence program. Hammond Middle School to the past triumphs and tragedies associated with the Civil Rights movement. This unique experience will be held from April 15 thru April 27th.
