Rosa was born in the town of Tuskegee in Alabama, a state in southern USA. Her mother was a teacher and her father a carpenter, and Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. On December 1, 1955, she boarded a city bus in Montgomery, Alabama and sat in the middle, where Black passengers in that city were allowed to sit unless a white person wanted the seat. As the bus filled with new riders, the driver told Parks to give up her seat to a white passenger. She refused. Rosa was also given the highest award given by the U.S. legislative branch, Congressional Gold Medal in 1997, and in 1999, Rosa Parks was named on the TIME magazine list of “The Top 20 most influential People of the 20th Century”.
