Shortly after her birth, her family moved into this house in Abbeville situated on a 260-acre farm owned by her grandparents, Anderson and Louisa McCauley. While living in Cleveland Court, Rosa Parks enjoyed working with young people and was very close friends with Rev. Robert and Jeannie Gratz. She attended church, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church where she served as a deaconess. Following the bus boycott, Rosa Parks and her family moved to Detroit, MI in 1957. Parks made history when she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery bus in in 1955. Parks' home was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage Located in downtown Montgomery, Alabama at the site where Mrs. Parks was arrested, it is the nation's only museum dedicated to Rosa Parks. Our mission is to honor her legacy and that of the boycott by providing a platform for scholarly dialogue, civic engagement, and positive social change. Historic markers designate the site where Rosa Parks boarded the public bus and where she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger and move to the back.
