GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Why is Rosa Parks standing in front of the bus seat which she famously refused to give up? That’s a question that has come up frequently about the statue of the GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The statute of Rosa Parks in downtown Grand Rapids is entering its 10th year in 2020, and on Thursday, News 8 sat down with the man who helped shepherd the project 250,000 people each year visit the Grand Rapids Art Museum adjacent to Rosa Parks Circle; 500,000 people attend ArtPrize, a city-wide art competition with the circle as its hub; Designated Area. The triangular park fits between Monroe Avenue NW, Monroe Center Street NW, and the Grand Rapids Art Museum. The transformation of downtown Grand Rapids over the years has resulted in the creation of Rosa Parks Circle, a stunning park-like setting with an ice skating rink in the winter and a concert venue all year round. Rosa Parks Circle (2006) Rosa Parks Circle is a plaza located in the heart of Grand Rapids, Michigan. [1] During the warmer months it is a multipurpose facility, acting as a venue for events like concerts [2] or dances put on by the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society (GROSS). [3] In the winter the Circle is converted to an ice rink. [4] Rosa Parks had no connection to the city and hadn't ever visited Grand Rapids, but in the end, the committee voted 4-3 to name the park for Parks. This particular plot of land was also notable for being the site of a rally for Robert Kennedy during his abbreviated presidential run in 1968, which ended with his assassination. As a member of Grand Rapids’ community relations board decades later, it was Robinson who said the city needed the statue, WOOD-TV reports. “I approached, initiated, requested, started action to put (Rosa Parks) there, where she is,” Robinson said.
