Alabama State University joins other community organizations in honoring the "mother" of the modern Civil Rights Movement, Rosa Parks. The University will participate with others in the Fourth Annual Rosa Parks Celebration, which is a series of events held on Dec. 1 and Dec. 4 to remember Parks’ heroic action taken on December 1, 1955, when This monument to civil rights icon Rosa Parks is located at the corner of S. Her 1955 arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott and gave impetus to the larger civil rights movement. Rosa Louise McCauley was born on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. As a child, she went to an industrial school for girls and later enrolled at Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes (present-day Alabama State University). Unfortunately, Parks was forced to withdraw after her grandmother became ill. Where did Rosa Parks go to college? Rosa Parks did not attend college. She attended the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls for 9th grade and went on to Alabama State Teachers College for Negroes (now Alabama State University) for 10th and part of 11th grade. However, she had to leave school at the age of 16 due to an illness in her family. A monument to Rosa Parks is prominently situated on the Alabama State University campus.
